The UNC Marathon Team is THE ONLY official marathon training team at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  The team exists to unite runners across campus with the goal of training and competing in full or half marathons. This team is designed to serve first time marathoners as well as experienced marathoners, creating a group of runners from a variety of backgrounds. We strive to run at least one half/full marathon during each semester. We provide a running group for both competitive and non-competitive runners – all runners are welcome! There are no cuts to the team and we welcome anyone who wants to come out, no matter how often.  Off season? No way!  The club is active both semesters and competes in various races both on campus and off.

MEETING/RUNNING TIMES

Monday-Friday: meet in front of Fetzer Gym (At the intersection of South Road and Raleigh Street) at 5 PM for a run; approximately 3-10 miles each day. If you are interested in running more or less miles, we have groups of runners training at a variety of levels.

Sunday: The club meets at the same location (stated above) for a long distance run 7 AM. The runs on Sundays range from 8 to 22 miles depending on the training regime of those who attend and if there are any upcoming races approaching.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

Official Practice will be cancelled for lightning, torrential rain, snow, below freezing temperatures (under 32°F/0°C), or if the Sports Medicine Center has closed due to inclement weather.  Club Members will be notified via GroupMe in a timely manner prior to the start of practice.

DUES

The team only has one payment of dues ($40) for the whole school year. This payment covers travel, a T-Shirt, pasta parties, and team breakfasts/dinners.

FORMS

All members of the UNC Marathon Team are required, regardless of whether or not they have paid dues, must sign a UNC Sports Clubs Concussion Form and Waiver. Both forms must be filled out through UNC IMLeagues before the member can be officially added to the roster.

TRANSPORTATION

Is covered by the club and is available to all due-paying members.  Any runner who has access to a car and could potentially drive to a race throughout the year is urged to fill out the Travel Insurance form. If you drive for the team, you will be reimbursed for gas. For more information, contact the club president.

OTHER MARATHON CLUB ACTIVITIES:

We have several fun runs throughout the semester, including a run to DOOK University. We also like to go camping, host team dinners within a few days of big races, and volunteer! Many of our members enjoy cross-training together by swimming, cycling, doing yoga, etc.

The team consists of all different paces and of runners from all different backgrounds. Some practice with the team for the enjoyment of running, some run alone and run the races with the team, others enjoy the bonds that are made as they train to run their first ever marathon. Think you’ve got what it takes? We’ve got what you want to take you there.
